Deirdre Charles is the Director of the Division of Student Services and Development (DSSD) at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus. Vision, passion, student advocacy and student development have been at the forefront of her over 19 years of work in the field of Student Services. She uses a holistic student development approach that requires careful assessments, utilizing sustained, strategic and integrated standards and guidelines that sync well with core institutional goals/principles, and this is evident in her 2015 redesign of the student services function at The UWI St. Augustine Campus.

With a strong focus on collaboration, Dr. Charles has not only been able to make a substantial positive impact on student life at The UWI but also regionally, and more specifically at the University of Belize where she has shared her strategic expertise, guidance and support in the restructuring of the University’s student services function. She has facilitated numerous training workshops in the areas of customer care and service, strategic direction and change, teambuilding, and leadership. Additionally, she mentors, works with, and champions holistic development for students throughout the region. She believes in serving the whole student whilst serving each student personally and helping them to understand the importance of their holistic development.

Deirdre holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of the West Indies, St Augustine Campus with a focus on Student Services, a MBA from Massey University in New Zealand, a M.A. in Training and Human Resource Development from the University of Warwick in England, and a B.Sc. in Public Sector Management from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus in Barbados.
