A Standing Ovation for Service: Former First Lady Mrs Zalayhar Hassanali O.R.T.T. Honoured at UWIDEF’s Ténor En Récital

The University of the West Indies Development and Endowment Fund (UWIDEF) officially launched its newest fundraising initiative on Saturday, June 6, 2026, with a sold-out evening of exceptional music, elegance and philanthropy held under the distinguished patronage of His Excellency Guillaume Pierre, Ambassador of the French Republic.

The inaugural event, Ténor En Récital, brought together patrons of the arts, members of the diplomatic corps, corporate leaders, educators, philanthropists and supporters of higher education in a shared commitment to raising funds for student bursaries and scholarships at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus.

From the moment guests entered His Excellency’s Residence they were welcomed into an atmosphere of refined elegance. The stately interior enhanced by exquisite black-and-gold décor, ambient lighting and carefully curated furnishings, provided a distinguished setting for an evening of music and philanthropy.

Exclusively sponsored by Jlew Signature Events Limited, the evening’s centrepiece was a captivating performance by acclaimed tenor Dr Edward Cumberbatch, accompanied by renowned pianist Dr Richard Tang Yuk. Together, they delivered a masterful programme featuring selections from Lieder, Oratorios, Arias and Spirituals, showcasing the richness and diversity of the classical vocal repertoire.

Complementing the musical experience was an exceptional culinary offering curated by Chef John Aboud and the Aioli team, whose refined menu delighted guests throughout the evening. Patrons also enjoyed a selection of premium wines courtesy of More Vino, alongside signature cocktails and mocktails featuring Blue Waters’ Cran and VIVA from S.M. Jaleel & Company Limited.

One of the most memorable moments of the evening came when Chairman of the UWIDEF, Professor of Practice Dr Sterling Frost O.R.T.T. paid tribute to Mrs Zalayhar Hassanali O.R.T.T. and conferred upon her Honorary Membership of the UWIDEF. The honour was bestowed in recognition of her distinguished service, unwavering support, and longstanding commitment to education, philanthropy, and the advancement of UWIDEF’s mission. In a moving address, Dr Frost reflected on Mrs Hassanali’s extraordinary legacy of service and compassion.

“Mrs Hassanali transformed what could have been a ceremonial role into a lifelong vocation of service. She reached out to the forgotten. She advocated for children and women. She championed persons with disabilities. And she brought dignity, comfort and hope to those who often stood beyond the spotlight of public attention. She demonstrated that leadership is not always exercised through authority. Sometimes it is exercised through compassion. Through generosity.”

The tribute was met with a standing ovation as guests celebrated Mrs Hassanali’s remarkable contributions to national development and humanitarian service.

The UWIDEF Vocal Recital Series continues on September 12, 2026 with soprano Ms. Natalia Dopwell and concludes on November 21 with soprano LeAndra. Proceeds from the series support student bursaries and scholarships at The UWI, St. Augustine Campus.
